Attitude Wins the Race
Chapter 1
Talent Is Common, Attitude Is Rare
Rodney Van
You know, talent is one of those things everyone loves to talk about. But here’s the truth—talent is everywhere! It’s in nearly every gym, every track team, every classroom. Natural ability? That’s just the starting point.
Rodney Van
What separates champions—and I mean real champions—is attitude I’ve seen it time and time again. — Let me tell you about this one athlete I coached. Not the fastest sprinter, didn’t have the best form, but man, their mindset was unstoppable. This kid showed up early, encouraged everyone else, and took every bit of coaching advice like it was gold. They didn’t make excuses, and they didn’t back down when it got hard. That’s what I mean by attitude.
Rodney Van
You see, talent might get you noticed, but attitude? That’s what earns respect. It’s what makes people want to ride with you, fight for you, and be in your corner. An athlete with talent but a lousy attitude? They sink the whole team—momentum gone. But when someone has the right attitude, they create momentum. They inspire people to push harder, dig deeper, and get better.
Rodney Van
And, I wanna be real here—it’s not just about sports. Attitude can be the edge in any pursuit, not just on the track. Whether it’s in your career, your relationships, or even just getting through a tough time. That attitude, that grit, it’s your edge, your lever. Trust me, some of the fastest, most naturally gifted athletes that I have coached; Did not win! Not because they didn’t have the talent, or the work ethic, they just did not want it more than the other athlete! While my toughest, most consistent, and mentally prepared athletes, shined when it mattered most.
Rodney Van
And and that’s the real lesson. Having raw talent is one thing, but being coachable, focused, and showing up—even when you don’t feel like it—that’s what takes you from good to great.
Chapter 2
Your Attitude Is Your Uniform
Rodney Van
Let me tell you something—before you even step foot on the field, before you even take that first rep or line up for that first heat, your attitude is already out there. It’s like your uniform. It’s what people notice without you saying a word.
Rodney Van
And here’s the thing—attitudes can be contagious. Positive or negative, they spread. If you’re walking around with a chip on your shoulder, blaming everyone else for how things aren’t going your way, you’re not just holding yourself back, you’re dragging your team down with you, It stalls everything—progress, momentum, all of it.
Rodney Van
But when you show up with that right mindset? When you’re focused, when you’re coachable, when you bring energy—man, it shifts the whole dynamic. You create momentum. People feed off it, and suddenly, the room feels different. The effort feels different.
Rodney Van
Let me take you back to a state meet years ago. Our team had this one runner—not the fastest, not even the most well-known. But this dude? He was the loudest out there, cheering for everyone, calling out splits, giving high-fives. His focus was laser sharp, on every warm-up drill, every instruction. By the time he got to his event, the whole team was fired up. It wasn’t just his performance—it was his presence. His attitude set the tone for everybody else to level up.
Rodney Van
So ask yourself this: What message is your attitude sending? Because you’re either motivating or you’re demotivating. There’s no in-between. And trust me, if you show up coachable, consistent, ready to give it everything—you’re already a step ahead, no matter what lane you’re in.
Rodney Van
It’s not about being flashy or having all eyes on you. It’s about bringing the kind of energy, the kind of mindset, that makes everything around you better.
Chapter 3
Owning Your Lane—On the Track and in Life
Rodney Van
Here’s something to think about: It doesn’t matter what lane you’re in. Lane 4, lane 8—it’s all about how you run your race. That’s what owning your lane is all about.
Rodney Van
See, — the thing about life—and sports, for that matter—is you don’t always get to pick your lane. You might be up against tough competition, or maybe you’re starting from a place that doesn’t seem exactly ideal. But how you approach it? That’s your choice. That’s where your attitude makes all the difference.
Rodney Van
Trust me, I know, I’ve been there! —Growing up, life threw me and my brother into situations that would’ve crushed most folks. Over twenty moves as kids, losing both of our parents? It was tough. But we had a choice—we could make excuses, or we could lace up and own whatever lane we found ourselves in. And you know what? We ran our race every time.
Rodney Van
When I got my opportunity to compete at San Diego State University, It did not start off well! But I focused on my lane—on my work, my preparation, my mindset. I couldn’t control what others were doing, but my lane, was mine to own! And because of that, I earned All-Conference honors and won several conference championships, not because I was the top athlete on the team, but because I believed where I started wasn’t going to dictate where I finished.
Rodney Van
Here’s the kicker, though—this lesson? It’s not just about sports. Owning your lane applies to anything. Whether it’s your job, your relationships, or just getting through the day, it’s about taking responsibility, showing up with intention, and refusing to fold under pressure.
Rodney Van
So my challenge to you is this: Starting today, attack every rep in life with a champion’s mindset. Don’t worry about what lane you’re in or who’s ahead of you. Just focus on what’s in front of you, and run your race like it means everything—because it does.
Rodney Van
And that’s it for today’s show. Remember this—your attitude is your edge. Run your race. Own your lane. And never forget: Attitude is everything. Until next time, I’m Coach Van, Let's Get it!.
